I’m no HR expert, but I thought “positions” where places in the org chart, and the people in positions conduct one or more “roles” i.e. a position is a placing and a role is a doing. So, I think you were more correct when you said that positions are shown on current/old org charts… and it seems like roles are closer to what you want org charts to be e.g. I have a “building teams” role and I can apply that anywhere its needed, not just through a specific functional “middle manager” position.
